Jon Townsend has worked for more than 30 years in the fields of mediation, facilitation, negotiation, diversity and cross-cultural conflict resolution, management and prevention. His consulting firm, AgreementsWork, provides training and consultation in the areas of collaborative-based negotiation, workplace mediation, cross-cultural mediation and business negotiation, inter-cultural communication and workforce diversity, labor-management negotiation, and community and organizational development. Jon has trained over 30,000 people in conflict resolution skills and in intercultural communication.
Throughout the United States and in Indian Country, Jon has assisted hundreds of organizations to diversify their workforce, negotiate and mediate “win-win” agreements, successfully manage intercultural conflict, and utilize and value differences in the workforce and community. His experience includes work with large businesses, with state, local and federal and tribal governments, as well as non-profit organizations, hospitals, communities, unions and individuals.

Jon is the founder of the national award-winning Clackamas County Dispute Resolution Center, and served as the Center’s Advisory Chair from 1993-2003. He both writes and lectures to professional audiences, and co-authored Power and Dispute Resolution in Indian Country, which appeared in the journal Mediation Quarterly. Jon’s most recent article, The Intercultural Mediator: Nexus of practice and theory, appears in the December 2002 issue of the Pacific Mountain Network News.
Internationally, Jon has conducted numerous workshops and provided consultations and training in Nicaragua, Mexico, Costa Rica, the former USSR, Russia, Guatemala, Ecuador, Cuba, Canada, Australia and Poland. On his fourth trip to the Russian Republic, Jon led an American delegation assisting with the reorganization of the Russian Employment Service. The assistance included seminars and consultation on such subjects as downsizing the workforce, job creation and job training, outplacement and retraining, customer service and dispute resolution issues. In April 1995, Jon was a senior team consultant and trainer in an historic dispute resolution training session with the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in Havana, Cuba.
Jon is a member of the Association for Conflict Resolution and the Oregon Mediation Association. He currently serves on the national Board of Directors of the Rural Community Assistance Corporation, and he is the Vice-President for the Agricultural Workers Trust Fund. He is the founder of the nationally recognized Clackamas County Dispute Resolution Center and is the immediate past Board Chair. Jon is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Presidential citation for his work in the area of job retraining, and the designation “Mediator of the Decade” by a national Indian Conflict Resolution program, presented for his many years teaching, training, mediating and consulting in Indian Country.
Jon has a Master’s Degree in Psychology from Sonoma State University. He is a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Indian Nation and of United Association of Labor Educators (UALE).
